GDS makes it back to NYC
For the second time in three years, Greensboro Day will make the trip up to New York to compete for the Dicks Sporting Goods High School National Tournament. During their first trip to Dicks they were a young team composed mostly of freshman and sophomores with the leadership coming from Senior Guard Darius Moore and Forward Peter Agba. They drew the matchup with Montverde Academy that featured top prospect Ben Simmons, even though they would come up short they would give Montverde some problems and let everyone in the city know that they were a legit team and would be back. During that tournament I had the privilege of being in the city and watching the young Greensboro Day squad compete. Without a doubt I was not only impressed with how hard they played but the swagger they played with , they didn’t back down from any challenge including the #1 prospect in the country and future #1 NBA draft pick.
Getting back to NY
In the following season they would come up short in the State Semi-finals losing to a very talented High Point Christian squad that featured players such as: Bam Adebayo, Michael Hueitt Jr and Jalen Segars. However this past season Greensboro Day was on an absolute mission and did not hold back from going at any teams, they played a very difficult non-conference schedule including tournaments like the Chick-Fil-A classic in South Carolina. They would finish the season as a top seed and take the NCISAA 3A crown back home to GDS with a win over Wesleyan Christian in an action packed matchup that would come down to the final moments. Once the selection committee looked over GDS résumé from the season it was clear that they were worthy of another invite to NY to compete with the top teams for a National Championship. The road will not be easy for the GDS squad, they field features teams such as: Oak Hill, La Lumiere, and IMG Academy with the top PG in the country Trevon Duval. However one thing we have learned about this GDS squad is that they will compete no matter who they are matched up, the squad will look to Senior J.P Moorman and Junior John Newman to lead the way scoring the ball and both of these young men never back down, which makes them a very dangerous opponent that has the heart of a champion.
