How did the final ranking compare to our early season predictions? Have a look!
Preseason Top 15 (I put the top 15 in the Breakdown book and then update the top ten at NHR through the year).
The Biggest Surprise? The team that we didn’t expect to be near the top ten was East Ridge but their young talent combined with their veterans led to a very nice year. New Prague was another team that played much above what we expected. That said, Wayzata, who we had 12th, finished third and spent a lot of time this year second in state. They were the biggest surprise in my opinion. They were expected to good, strong. But Coach Schnettler, a Breakdown Coach of the Year, made them fantastic, as well as one of the best.
Here was our preseason top 15 for 16-17.
- Champlin Park
- Hopkins
- Apple Valley
- Lakeville North
- Maple Grove
- Rochester JM
- Cretin-Derham Hall
- Tartan
- Chaska
- Woodbury
- Eden Prairie
- Wayzata
- Lakeville South
- Osseo
- Bloomington Jefferson
Next year #1. Apple Valley of course. Don’t get me wrong, the Eagles aren’t void of loss. Mohamed Kone, Kevin Totusek, and Mason Morse were excellent Eagles contributors, Kone and Morse started! That said the majority of this Apple Valley team was juniors and of course their big run should be next year. Led by Tre Jones. So yeah, if the Eagles can lose Gary Trent Jr and win a state title, I would say they have a good chance to lose three solid seniors and have a chance at another title. Luke Martens, Ely Hendrickson, Nathan Macho, and Spencer Rolland all return as well.
