Continue ReadingAt the beginning of the season we previewed the Village Christian squad and were quite impressed with how good they could possibly be this season. With the majority of the team returning from last year and the additions of Wing player Omari Wilson & Dakari Johnson they seemed to poise to compete for a state championship once again.
Throughout the season they played a tough schedule with matchups against Word of God twice, Trinity Christian twice, Heritage HS, IMG Academy and many more top notch teams. Although they didn’t finish the regular season undefeated they would finish with a record of 25-5 which was very impressive considering the strength of their schedule.
However once the seeding for the NCISAA 2A State tournament was released Village would only receive a #5 seed , which had quite a few people scratching their heads. They would open up against St. David’s who feature 2018 Kris Monroe, the Knights would win that game but would lose Center Nas Daniels to an ankle injury. Next up would be at Carolina Day School which would force the Village Christian squad to travel all the way to Asheville but the Knights would take home the win and advance to the Semi-Finals.
In the Semi-Finals they faced Gaston Day on their home floor and would win by 2, placing them in the state championship game on Saturday where they would win the game with a wider margin. They say that it’s always harder when you try to repeat for a championship and without a doubt that was the case for Village but they endured and overcame. Huge shout out to Coach Darden and Coach Graham for their labor with the team and to each and every player that suited up for them this season. Now the question will arise, will Village be able to get 3 in a row? Only time will tell but it’s never wise to count out a program that has just won back to back chips.
