And after showcasing his elite scoring ability and continuing to diversify his offensive skill-set, Division II programs have looked past his stature and are starting to get serious about recruitment.
“I’ve been getting texts and calls from Northwest Missouri State, and I went on a visit to Winona State a couple months ago,” said the junior standout. “Those are the schools that have been in contact with me, and the rest of the interest is just camp invites and stuff like that.”
Last spring and summer, Stevens has the opportunity to run with Iowa’s premier grassroots program, the Iowa Barnstormers, which he says aided greatly with recruitment.
But this year, he’ll again play with the Mavericks.
“I played with the Barnstormers last summer, and that certainly helped get my recruitment started. But there’s so many great players on that team, that minutes were hard to come by,” said Stevens.
“I thought it was my best option to get more minutes and play in front of more coaches, and I thought the Mavs would still help me get the college attention. I just need to show the college coaches that I’m able to guard as a smaller point guard.”
During his time with the Barnstormers, Stevens was able to hone his ability to distribute the ball.
“I’d have to say I’ve improved the most on distributing the ball. Last year, I really didn’t do a whole lot of distributing, but playing this summer for the Barnstormers I had to pass the ball a lot more,” said Stevens. “And I feel like that’s helped out with Senior a lot this year.”
Stevens came into his junior season with the Rams as a team captain, and was rolling right along before suffering a foot injury just before the Winter Break.
He’s back now, and ready to lead his team again during the latter third of the season.
Stevens says being sidelined has helped in other areas of his game.
“A lot of it has been a learning experience. I am one of the captains, but it’s really helped me a lot even more with leadership. Being able to coach my teammates a lot more in-game, and letting them know what they need to do,” said Stevens. “We still have a lot of young guys, and they listen to me and accept my help, so it’s been going very well.”
