“It’s like [Friday] night, when you average 25 points a game and when you get your name out there, they’re going to double-team you and it’s going to open up things for other people on my team. And I’m just focused on winning games. If other people are scoring and our team’s winning, that’s all that matters,” South said.
Bethel only has two games remaining in the regular season: Friday against Tri-Village and the following Friday at Newton. They are undefeated in the conference, and with the end of the season in sight, South is getting close to reaching one of his season goals.
“Finish the season undefeated the conference … return back to Districts, and hopefully go to a Regional Final which is something our school hasn’t done in over a decade,” South said, when asked about his season goals.
The 6’1” point guard told PHO that he doesn’t think too much about recruitment during the high school season.
“I just try to take it one game at a time. Because if you get caught up in thinking about everything that’s going on, it’s just too much to think about. We have goals, I can’t just think about myself.”
Even so, it’s impossible not to see the mail and be aware of it.
South has added interest from a number of schools since we spoke in early October. His full list of interest is as follows: Findlay, Ashland, Wright State, Toledo, Liberty, Stetson, Holy Cross, Loyola, and St. Johns.
“Most of the teams that talked to us, said they’re going to come watch us in AAU. Findlay wrote me a letter, and then, like I said last time, I went on a visit to Ashland,” South said.
Just a few months ago, South talked about improving his shooting range in order to take the next step as a player. On Friday, it was clear he’s done so. Point being, South is a diligent gym rat with an eagerness to improve.
Coming away from this interview, it’s impressive how focused South is on accomplishing team goals when he’s having so much individual success.
If you cannot make it to Bethel for any of his last few games, South plans on playing in the OH-NOVA grassroots program again this summer.
