So, here’s what 6’1” senior point guard Brandon Waugh had to say: “I knew we weren’t as talented as last year … But we have the talent to fill every spot we needed for this team. We have shooters, we have role players, we have rebounders. We have everything that makes us the great team we are today.”
This sense of belief coming from the senior point guard is a needed quality. Also, it helps that Waugh is willing to fill a number of roles on a given night.
“My role is as a floor general and a contributor. Contributing in any way. If we’re lacking in rebounds, I’ll go down there and grab some rebounds. If we’re lacking in steals, I’ll go grab some steals. If we’re lacking in points, I can score at will. If we’re lacking in getting everyone involved, I’ll do that,” Waugh said.
Waugh certainly has a versatile skillset, especially offensively. What’s more is that Waugh is at his best on the defensive side.
“My main aspect of my game is probably on the defensive end. I don’t know how many steals I average per game, but I get at least three to four a game,” Waugh said.
When you watch the tape, you’ll notice Waugh has good instincts off the ball. His long arms and quickness allows for those blindside double-teams to pay off.
Moving back to offense, another thing you’ll notice about Waugh is limited dribbling. Waugh does not waste time trying to embarrass defenders. Instead, he gets to his spots quick and keeps the offense in sync.
“You have to know who you’re playing. You have to know your personnel. If you’re playing a lockdown defender, you know you can’t go left and right. You got to go more North and South; you can’t do too many dribbles. It’s all just knowing personnel and knowing how their defense reacts,” Waugh said.
Recruitment
Waugh is definitely taking his recruitment process seriously, in the sense that he’s truly searching for the best fit. Waugh has attended games of potential landing spots and talks to students at those universities about the campus environment.
Right now, Waugh is being recruited by the following programs: Ohio Northern, Capital, Otterbein, Ohio Christian, and Cincinnati Christian.
“I’ve talked to some other coaches here and there. But I usually talk to the colleges I just named three times a week, or every day,” Waugh said.
He also went on to identify his two favorites at the moment, “The one I feel I have the most of a relationship with is Ohio Northern … Also, Capital. Capital has been to a lot of my games,” Waugh said.
Waugh is looking for an academic fit that provides a comfortable environment.
His next game will be at Mifflin High School on Friday at 7PM.
