Continue ReadingBrandon McQueen (2017) was flat-out special in last year’s State Championship run for Cornerstone Christian Academy. When you return the 6’1” guard and backcourt mate, Mike Bothwell, expectations surely surrounded this year’s team.
McQueen explained the dynamics at play this season for CCA.
“I would say it’s been going pretty well. Been a fun season just getting ready for the playoffs now,” McQueen said.
Winning the State Championship is obviously never a bad thing. However, as McQueen will tell you, it can add a layer of “complacency.”
“It’s kind of tough, because we know what we got to do. But at the same time, sometimes we can get complacent and stuff like that. Thinking that, ‘hey we might of loss but we’re still going to States and stuff like that,’” McQueen said.
But with guys like McQueen, an experienced team leader who is conscious of the situation going into the playoffs, don’t be worried about CCA. They’ve played a tough schedule, especially for a Division IV team. Also, they’re talented.
McQueen said that he’s taken on more of an attacking role on the offensive side this season. He has put up some big nights in the scoring category. But he prides himself on his court vision and lead guard skills.
“Most people I’ve talked to, they’ve told me I’ll be a point guard [in college]. Mostly because of my vision and they way I can come off of ball-screens,” McQueen said.
He also personally prefers the point guard role.
Currently, the schools interested in eventually handing the lead guard reigns over to McQueen are Cedarville, Lourdes, Mount Union, Marietta, and Baldwin Wallace.
Lourdes, an NAIA program, and Cedarville, who compete Division II, have both extended scholarship offers to McQueen.
McQueen also went on to discuss what it would like for him to play for one of the mentioned Division III schools.
“A lot of Division III schools I’ve talked to, they’ve really been telling that I could come in and make an impact right away. Lot of D-III schools want me playing the point guard position for them,” McQueen said.
The quick impact appeals to McQueen, as he listed it as one of the factors he’ll base a decision on.
“To me, it’s just where I fit and where I have a good time at. Where I feel like I can make the most impact at on the court, and can get a good education.”
He’s keeping all five of these options open. Furthermore, other schools could join the conversation over the next few months, as there’s no timetable for McQueen’s decision.
He carries a 2.7 GPA in the classroom.
