Maloney, a junior combo guard, is averaging 13 points per game while contributing as one of the team’s leading rebounders, top playmakers and defenders. The Saints are 16-5 on the year and currently riding a five-game winning streak.
St. Charles just recently picked up a win over section opponent Lake City and while the Saints have taken more losses this year than they did all of last year, their strength of schedule is much better. Maloney said he thinks that will be beneficial to them late in the year.
“Our coach has definitely gotten a tougher schedule to hopefully prepare us for the playoffs,” Maloney said. “It’s helped us get better throughout the year. I feel like we’re peaking as we get to the end of the season.”
Section 1AA might be the most competitive section in the state with teams like Caledonia, Lake City, Pine Island and Rochester Lourdes all potentially pushing for 20 wins along with St. Charles. Throw in Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Plainview-Elgin-Millville and there are seven teams that will likely win more than 15 games. It’s a loaded section.
“It definitely is,” said Maloney. “I’ve hear dwe could be as low as the four seed but I’ve heard maybe as high as two. So there’s still a lot that can happen. A lot of things still have to play out.”
The Saints went to the section final game a year ago though and have the talent and experience to make another run this season.
Maloney’s been in contact with a number of coaches in the area including Hamline, St. Mary’s and University of Wisconsin, Stout. He spent last spring/summer playing AAU with Minnesota Select is said he plans on doing that again this upcoming offseason in hopes of gaining more exposure.
“AAU is a great tool to get me out there for colleges and for advancing my game,” said Maloney. “There is always room for improvement and I’ve been in the gym working on my game and continuing to get better as much as I can.”
