A 6-foot-5 combo-forward, Montes is currently Iowa’s 43rd-ranked 2019, and has put up some huge numbers for the Thunder this season.
Montes’ main focus as he heads into postseason play and then his 16U spring with Kingdom Hoops, is to keep developing as a wing-type player.
“I’m trying to work on every aspect of my game because I need to get better. And I’ve seen a lot of progress in my shooting and dribbling,”said Montes.
“I hope I can play in AAU as a small forward or a shooting guard or something like that.”
“My coaches expect a lot out of me, and we have to play like a team, and not selfish. So they look for me to pass and shoot, and not give up on plays,” said Montes.
“The goal for us is to go to state and win a championship. And we’re trying to do our best in any way and work hard everyday.”
Last season, Montes helped the Thunder get to the state tournament as a freshman. But they were trounced by South O’Brien after shooting 35 3s and making just 10 of them.
This season they’re taking a bit of a different approach.
“We’re trying to not do that again, we’re trying to get the ball down low a lot more,” said Montes.
Just as soon as his sophomore season ends in March, Montes will focus on his 16U season with Kingdom Hoops.
“I’m trying to get some college options,” said Montes. “And I’m just trying to play hard and get better everyday.”
