15. Bonnabel
The good news is that Bonnabel finally got the signature win they they had been looking for all year, coming against district foe Chalmette at home. The bad news is that they lost their very next game against a good but not great East Jeff, and later losing to Chalmette.
14. Chalmette
The reason that Chalmette is ahead of Bonnabel is simple, strength of schedule. The Owls have also won 6 straight since their loss to Bonnabel, including avenging that loss and taking down a tough Landry-Walker team. Chalmette now has the inside track to a district championship, and just has to win out to accomplish it.
13. East Ascension
Bold claim of the day: East Ascension has played the toughest schedule in the state. East Ascension has played 11 of the 25 teams on this list, and only has 6 losses to show for it. That tough schedule has come in handy, as the Spartans currently hold the top seed in 5A.
12. St. Thomas More
Here is a fun stat: The Cougars have only lost 3 games this season since getting their football players back from their first state championship in football. Can STM win both titles in the same year? They look to be heading into the playoffs with the top seed, and the team to beat.
11. Washington Marion
Another team that is riding a hot streak into the playoffs, and unless something goes very wrong for Washington Marion, should be on a 12 game win streak come playoff time.
10.Ouachita Parish
The Lions have only lost once since the start of the new year, coming on the road against Natchitoches Central. Ouachita still has an opportunity to avenge that loss in two weeks, which would lead to the Lions capturing a district title.
9. U-High
After starting the season as one of the final three undefeated teams in the state, the Cubs have now lost 2 district games for the first time since 2013, putting another district title in serious trouble.
8. Natchitoches Central
What a tough district 2-5A is! On top of the two at the top in Ouachita and NCHS, there is also very tough Ruston, West Monroe, and Alexandria. Now that the Chiefs have two losses in district play, it is going to take a miracle for them to capture another district title.
7. De La Salle
I was higher than most on De La Salle coming into the season, but even I didn’t see this coming. In my opinion, the Cavaliers are the team to beat in a very tough Division 2 state championship race, after going into a rowdy St. Thomas More, and losing the game by only one. If that game is on a neutral site, it is going to be very tough for the Cougars.
6. St. Augustine
The Purple Knights now control their own destiny when it comes to winning a historically tough “Catholic League” district, as a win next Friday against Brother Martin will trigger a playoff between the two teams for district supremacy.
