That means that we are heading down the final stretch of the season here in Louisiana, and within the next two weeks, we will be crowning 12 brand new state champions. If you read the first round previews, you will have seen that we have hit more than 80% of our predictions. Now I’m not a betting man, but I like those odds. We are going to be continuing those previews and predictions here, moving on to Class 4A.
- Washington Marion vs. 16. Edna Karr
The fact that even in a down year that Edna Karr was able to get a playoff win should say a hell of a lot about a very proud and very historic program out of New Orleans. However, that nice story came to a crashing halt as Washington Marion was able to beat Karr 80-52.
PHLA Pick: Washington Marion
- Tioga vs. 24. Assumption
The upset Assumption had over Opelousas in the first round is not an upset that I saw coming, but one that I should have seen. Assumption has only lost twice since the start of the new year, going 11-2 over that stretch. They were a hot team, and they have the potential to keep this thing going.
PHLA Pick: Assumption
- Fair Park vs. 12. Deridder
There is potential here for an upset by Deridder, simply because 6’7 Randy Gladney will most likely be the best player in the game. However, I was high on Fair Park heading into the season, so I will be riding out with them.
PHLA Pick: Fair Park
- Woodlawn-Shreve vs. 13. Abbeville
Abbeville is having a surprising season this far. I knew that they had a fair amount of athletes, and I had a feeling they would make the playoffs, but I had them slotted in more of a 20-28 seed heading into the year. They have far outplayed that, but I don’t think they are going to have the pieces to take down a tough Woodlawn team
PHLA Pick: Woodlawn-Shreve
- Westgate vs. 19. Morgan City
Morgan City was able to pull off the upset in the first round by clamping down on defense and slowing things down, only allowing McDonough 35, 43 points. On the other side, Westgate just barely squeaked by Warren Easton in the first round. If Morgan City is able to slow the game down and out coach Westgate, I think they will get the win
PHLA Pick: Morgan City
- Plaquemine vs. 11. LaGrange
Plaquemine was able to pick up the surprisingly big win over LaGrange in a game that was played a day early. They were able to handle the size that LaGrange’s front court poses and get a big win, 74-49.
PHLA Pick: Plaquemine
- Ellender vs. 10. Carencro
This is a big game between two schools that have a ton of talent, but haven’t been able to totally been able to put it together. I think Ellender is going to be able to take it, if only because Tae Martin is going to be the best player on the court, he is a senior, and they are at home. That is a lot for Carencro to overcome, but I wouldn’t be totally surprised if they do.
PHLA Pick: Ellender
- Bossier vs. 15. Northside
This is another matchup of historically great teams, in Northside and Bossier, who each have a fair amount of state championships on their shoulders. However, I think that Northside is in the midst of a down year, and Bossier is going to be able to pick up the win. But once against I wouldn’t be totally shocked if Northside came away with a win.
PHLA Pick: Bossier
