In the second round is where a lot of the intriguing match-ups start to shape-up, so Prep Hoops is here with a look at some of this week’s match-ups and possible match-ups in Division I.
What a week to be a high school basketball fan here in Cincinnati. The second round brings us some very tasty playoff matchups with the possibility for even better matchups for the weekend. Let us first take a look at the Mason Comets, the 4th seeded team in the region who after a first round bye play St. Xavier Wednesday night at Lakota West. Mason’s depth and experience should propel them past the Bombers were a possible 3rd matchup against conference foe Lakota East could await Saturday night. That is provided that the Thunder Hawks are able to move past Kings High School also Wednesday night at Lakota East. Mason is 2-0 against East this season in GMC play.
The top ranked D-I team in the state the Moeller Crusaders also plays its first tournament game this week, with a matchup against 23rd seeded Little Miami Wednesday at Hamilton High School. This is the first in what should be an easy road to the District Finals for Coach Carl Kremer team. Possible matchups against Walnut Hills or Elder in that District Final could prove to be the toughest matchup for Might Moe, provided that Walnut or Elder advances that far.
Another interesting match-up to watch this week will be the Colerain/Princeton match-up Tuesday night at Hamilton High School. Colerain had a rough year this going 3-19 overall and 1-15 in conference. But their one conference win was against the same Vikings team that they play Tuesday, and they won that January 24th match-up with Ohio State commit Darius Bazley on the floor for Princeton. If I were Coach Leon Ellison squad I would overlook this young Cardinals team or another upset could be in the making. In particular since Colerain have had a few days to prepare since they received a first round bye.
