Nelson has continued his dominance on Western North Carolina opposing basketball teams this year after being named Western Highlands conference co-player of the year last season. He scored 31 points and pulled down 11 rebounds last night against Pisgah HS. He is averaging 29 points and almost 11 rebounds per game this season, good enough to lead our players in western North Carolina.
No other player in western North Carolina dominates a game of the way that Nelson does. He can play multiple positions on the floor and always has the ball in his hands and when the game is close. He is bigger and stronger than most of the competition in the area.
Nelson grew up in Charlotte and transferred to North Henderson HS before his freshman season. In Charlotte he would’ve attended Kennedy Charter school, which has produced over the last few years some of the best talent in the Queen City. He played this past summer with Team United on the Nike EYBL circuit.
At 6-foot-5, Nelson can take over a game with his size, scoring ability, and length. He is a do-it-all type player who has a passion for winning. His recruitment is not at the level that it should be coming from a under-recruited area. If coaches want a tough, do-it-all winner for their team then I would give Austin Nelson a look. He is a player that can play virtually four positions on the floor at any given time at the next level. He has a good head on his shoulders and doesn’t let the refereees or opposing players double and triple team him affect his game. When this happens he becomes a pass first point guard.
