With the college season almost half over, coaches are going to be looking for players to come in and play. PrepHoopsNC’s analyst Justin Byerly takes a look at some of the top unsigned seniors in the state.
Tyler Maye– The senior floor general at Farmville-Central High School is a true leader on the court, loves getting others involved in the offense and has a high basketball IQ. He can score in such a variety of ways it makes it difficult for defenses to pick a way to guard him. Lay off and he will knock down the jumper. Play too close and he will drive by you and get in the lane. Has very quick hands on defense that causes problems.
Austin Nelson-One of the most prolific scorers in WNC, Nelson is a Charlotte native who moved to North Henderson High School at the start of his freshman season. He can play multiple positions on the floor and is averaging around 31 points per game this season for the Knights. He played over the summer with Team United on the Nike EYBL circuit. Nelson has the size and body for the next level.
Cam Hamilton– The senior out of Vance High School in Charlotte is a big time scorer. He has had multiple games over 30-plus points and is getting interest from Presbyterian, Belmont-Abbey, UNC-Pembroke, Fayetteville State, Catawba, Army, Winston-Salem State, Charleston Southern, and Lee University.
Quay Kimble– Shelby High School is always full of athletes, the last Golden Lion who scored so prolifically, Gabe DeVoe is now a junior at Clemson. Quay Kimble is one of the quietest scorers I have ever seen. He has the ability to get hot from beyond the three-point line, can score off the dribble and can take over the game when he needs to. He is a little undersized but has heart and passion that should make up for it.
Jaylan McGill– Back home for his senior season at Olympic HS in Charlotte, McGill has offers from Lees-McRae , The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, and North Carolina Central University but I have been hearing from Furman , Dayton and Southern Utah lately. He is a player who can score from all three platforms. At 6’2 he has an knack for scoring with contact at the basket, he also has great range and can consistently knock down the long ball.
Todd Smith– Smith is great in the full-court or setting up the ball in the half-court offense, a very good ball-handler and can score ff the dribble. He is an elite level athlete with a vertical in the 40-41 inch range.
