TOPEKA, Kan. — Vashon showed why the are a force to be reckoned with in Missouri hoops with a dominating performance at the Topeka Invitational, knocking off Wichita Southeast in Saturday’s championship game with a 20-point runaway win.
Vashon got a game-high from 2018 forward Joseph Reece, while 2017 guard Daniel Farris added 16 and Levi Stockard went for 16.
The win for Vashon (13-2) came on the heels of 42-point thumping of Wichita South on Friday.
MVP: Joseph Reece (Vashon). A 6’8 2018 wing player, Reece finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds and knocked down five 3-pointers. His outside shooting led Vashon, which knocked down 13 3-pointers in the contest.
Best offensive performance: Israel Barnes (Wichita SE). Barnes went for 21 and scored from all over the court, but struggled to find his shot throughout much of the game. He finished the three-game tournament with 90 points and showed why he is one of the top players in the state. A 6’4 guard, Barnes has a big strong, athletic frame, is a well-rounded and versatile guard, and an ultimate competitor. He has one offer (Tulsa) and we are incredulous as to why he doesn’t have more.
Best defensive performance: Malik Perkins (Wichita SE). A 6’6 2017 forward, Perkins and 6’3 2018 forward Tarik Adkins helped contain Kansas State signee Levi Stockard and also did some good work on the boards, teaming to haul in 14 rebounds in the game.
Best shooter: Daniel Farris (Vashon). The Wolvereens made 13 3-pointers in this one, and Farrism who finished with 16 points, made four. He is a tough 6’0 2017 point guard and has smooth left handed shooting stroke.
Best rebounder: Joseph Reece (Vashon). Reece hauled in 11 rebounds.
Best underclassman: Cam’ron Fletcher and Kobe Clark (Vashon). Fletcher and Clark are both 6’4 2020 wings that are long, athletic players. Fletcher knocked down a 3 and pulled in a pair of rebounds in this one. Both players appear to be the future at Vashon and part of a standout freshman class.
Name to remember: Joseph Reece (Vashon). Love this kids game. A 6’8 2018 small forward, Reece reminds you of former NBA standout Tayshaun Prince as a long, athletic wing that can defend multiple positions as well as knock down outside shots. On Saturday, he really had it working from long distance, dialing up five 3-pointers and finishing with 18 points to lead Vashon.
Name to remember, Part II: Johnny Murdock (Wichita SE). Murdock is a 5’10 2019 guard with a smooth 3-point shooting stroke. He is the son of former Missouri State standout by the same name.
