Continue ReadingStill one of the more under the radar juniors in the state, 6-foot-5 small forward Zaine Leedom is likely to see a spike in his recruitment soon.
The former Grinnell and current East Marshall prospect is a high-flying wing with some serious length, and can knock-down a jumper too.
There’s been two programs — a Division II and an NAIA — to take notice so far.
“There’s only been two colleges that have contacted me about visits; Winona State has contacted me and we’ve talked quite a bit, and Briar Cliff is the other one,” said Leedom.
“I’m getting a visit set up with Winona State sometime this February.”
He says he’s not overly concerned with the seeming lack of recruitment up to this point.
“I’m not very worried about a bunch of schools calling just yet, I know I still have plenty of time left,” said Leedom. “But, ya, this spring and summer is going to be pretty important to get that started because if I plan on going somewhere, this is where it starts, is this spring and summer.”
Though his high-flying jams and penchant for swatting shots is great, Leedom is always working to evolve as a player.
“I’ve just been focusing on getting to the rim; I feel like if I’m going to be able to do something at the next level then that’s going to be a big part of it,” he said. “Obviously, I still work on my shot quite a bit, but getting to the rim is what I mainly focus on.”
After sitting out the first half of the season due to transfer rules, Leedom has East Marshall surging. The Mustangs have won five of six since he joined the team, and he’s averaging 19 points per game on 64 percent shooting.
“The first couple of games I was just getting a feel for the team, and since then I feel like I’ve fit in pretty well,” said Leedom. “Everybody has been really good about me coming in and helping me blend in with the team.”
Now, with Leedom leading the charge, the sky’s the limit for the Mustangs.
“I don’t see any reason why we can’t win out and possibly get to state, so that’s the big goal,” he said. “Our districts did come out, and I feel like we have a pretty good chance of making it to state.”
His career with East Marshall is off to a high-flying start, you could say. Check out this alley-oop jam off the opening tip at Iowa Valley, Marengo.

“That was my third game with the team, and Zane Johnson tipped it to Tyler (DeBondt) and Tyler threw it up and it was executed to perfection.”
