Gehling had a very nice 16U summer last year with the Iowa Mavericks, and has carried that momentum into his junior season. He averaging 13.8 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds for the Trailblazers.
“A couple of D3 and NAIA schools have been in contact, and that was mostly during the fall. It was Grand View and William Penn that got a hold of me after the (Prep Hoops Iowa) camp,” said Gehling.
“I’m just kind of hoping that the summer goes well, and that I get noticed a little bit more.”
Tall and rangy and with an ever-developing skill-set, Gehling defined his playing style to PHIA.
“I like to get after it rebounding, and on defense try and get a lot of blocks. I’ve really worked on my 3-point shooting the past year, and just a lot of working on shooting in general,” said Gehling.
“My coach has an individual role for each of us, and me and a couple other guys he wants taking most of the shots.”
Gehling has been instrumental in helping the Trailblazers to a 10-3 start. And says as he’s found his groove, so has the team.
Through 13 games he’s averaging 12.7 points on 50 percent shooting, and a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game.
“Early in the season I was struggling a little bit, I had a knee injury and that didn’t help,” said Gehling. “But I’m starting to pick it up a little bit, and hoping the rest of the season I can help my team get to State.”
