Continue ReadingDuring his senior season, Orange High School’s (Pepper Pike, OH) Jalen Warren has been earning a master’s degree in creating separation. Along with defense and shooting, off-ball movement has become one of the 6’2” combo guard’s specialties.
“Every game they double [team] on me. Like [Friday] night, they started in man but then were in full denial on me,” Warren said, who only finished with seven points against Geneva that night.
As mentioned, Warren has found some tactics to use the defense’s attention to his advantage.
“I just make sure to stay involved in the play … So if they go full-denial, we’ll use me as a distraction to go set a ball-screen or something because they’ll either have to switch or my teammate will go to the basket and get a bucket,” Warren said.
Also, on the highlight video below, you’ll see plenty of plays where Warren manipulates a zone defense to find an open three.
Even though Warren is currently averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, he’s yet to be offered by a college program. However, he has drawn interest from various Division II and Division III programs.
“For example, from D-III, La Roche College was at my game [Friday] night. The game before it was Washington and Jefferson. From D-II, they haven’t came to my game yet but Lake Erie was in contact with me over the summer. And that’s about it,” Warren said.
“As well as my basketball skills, I also have a 3.8 GPA and I’m looking to go into medicine. So, the school has to be a good fit for me as far as basketball and academics. I’m looking to major in biology.”
Warren also noted that he’s willing to walk-on if he identifies a good fit.
At 6’2”, Warren has the ability to endure contact and still finish inside. He’s aware that it needs to become more consistent though.
“I get most of my buckets from the three-point line. But I think I do need to improve on scoring on that first level in the paint,” Warren said.
“I’m best at getting my teammates involved. I know I can score, but my dad and my coach always tell me I’m a little too unselfish … But, I think my best trait is getting my teammates involved.”
As it stands, Warren’s style of play has helped Orange to an 8-5 record overall, and 7-1 in the Chagrin Valley Conference. For those interested, their next game is this Tuesday at home against West Geauga.
However, one thing you won’t pick up from simply watching Warren is his ambitions outside of basketball. He told PHO that he will pursue becoming a doctor. Throughout the interview, he also came across as a high-character guy, so we’re sure he’d be a quality addition to any locker-room.
