Kade holds a 32 ACT while his brother holds a 31 and both have a 4.0 GPA. He says his game starts with fundamentals, and while he isn’t the most athletic, he’s a tough defender a solid outside shoots.
He and his brother both competed for MoKan Select and says he spent a lot of time working out in the weight room, focused on getting stronger and faster.
That hard work has paid off as he and Kurtis and others have helped Basehor-Linwood start the season 5-2 and a No. 3 ranking in Class 4A. It’s only losses coming to Topeka Hayden and Hogan Prep. Kade said the team has developed a tight bond over years having played together since elementary school.
“We aren’t very tall or athletic, with the exception of (senior guard) Eric Scott,” Tatkenhorst said. “We make it up by being fundamental and wearing teams out. We take a lot of pride on defense and on offense we like to wear teams out by running our offense and looking for a great shot.”
Tatkenhorst said he is looking forward to playing Piper, a squad that is 9-1 and currently ranked fourth in 4A and is also a part of the Kaw Valley conference.
Tatkenhorst said his dad, who has coached him since the second grade, has been the most influential person in his basketball career, but also mentioned Basehor-Linwood head coach Mike McBride and MoKan coach Adam Short.
“They have taught me a lot, especially about toughness,” he said.
Tatkenhorst said he has drawn interest from several NAIA and Division III schools and has taken a visit to Simpson College, but has not made a decision yet.
