Eli is a 6 foot 3 guard, and is one of the younger stars for the Patriots. Although he is unranked in Prep Hoops Class of 2018 rankings, he could easily make the list soon.
I asked Eli how the season was going so far and he told me, “We started off bad with 4 or 5 losses but then we turned around and got 3 wins in a row. The leadership is getting better and all our players are growing as a unit”. The timing couldn’t be any better for Eli and his teammates as they play the final games of the regular season before the OHSAA tournament begins.
One advantage some may think Eli has, is the luxury of having his father be one of the coaches on staff at Carroll. I asked Eli how having his dad as a coach has helped develop his game. “A lot of people think it may benefit me more, but honestly he’s just another coach. His experience of playing college basketball helps me because he can train me and I can relate to him a lot better than other coaches”.
The training his dad has given Eli has definitely paid off. As of January 28, Eli is leading Carroll in scoring, rebounding, and blocks. He tells me there is definitely pressure on him to be a go-to-guy because of this, but at the same time, he feels confident when his coach does run a play for him. “I think we have a lot of guys that can step up in late game situations but whenever coach says ‘Get the ball to Eli’, I know for sure it’s going to go in”.
Eli is averaging 14 points and 8 rebounds per game. He credits his size to be one of the reasons why his stats are this way. “I am a taller guard. When (opponents) guards guard me I can post him up. If a big guards me, I can blow right past him. Defensively, I can stay in front of guards, and also play post defense”. Because of his size advantage and his ability to score upwards of 20 points on a given night, Eli sees double teams more often now than before. When this does happen he sometimes allows it to get into his head. Eli wants to improve on this as well as staying out of foul trouble and considering he is only a junior, there is still plenty of time to improve on this.
Eli’s long term goal for next year with Carroll is to help get the Patriots on the map. “I really want to get to Districts and try to get to Regionals. Of course it would be nice to win state but that’s always in the long run”. With Carroll having 4 seniors on the roster currently and many young players coming back next season, Eli’s goal of a District title is definitely manageable.
Eli currently holds no offers and some interest from Capital. As the high school season winds down, expect to see Eli Ramsey on 1st team All-Greater Catholic League and to become an even better player through AAU season. Eli is definitely a player to keep an eye on.
