The stretch forward position may be the one of the most popular positions in basketball these days, with so many versatile forwards in the NBA playing this position it has trickled down to the high school and college levels at a high rate. Well West Bladen HS has a nice stretch forward prospect of their own in Senior John Bowen, my first time getting a very close look at him play was this past summer during the UNCP Elite camp. With the help of Bowen and fellow seniors, Dent and Page the West Bladen squad has gone on a 10 game winning streak recently defeating Pender HS. Last week I had the privilege to stop in and check out West Bladen in their tournament Championship game vs. Dillon HS, and I must say I left very impressed with multiple players from the squad.
What makes him special?
First and foremost you will notice the shooting ability of this young man, at 6’7 he can really stretch the floor with his ability the trey ball with consistency. He has a smooth shooting stroke and doesn’t waste time with any extra movement, he keeps his elbow in and lets it fly, although he doesn’t elevate much on his shot it’s not a huge concern considering his height. Another attribute of his game that I really liked was how well he follows his shot and crashes the offensive boards, there was countless situations during the game where he provided extra possessions and even scored off the offensive rebounds. Last but not least is his ability to be a good teammate, he has no problem with swinging the ball to the hot man and when he got in foul trouble he could constantly be seen on the bench clapping it up for his teammates.
