Pleasant Grove- Matthew Van Komen is the tallest sophomore basketball player in the United States and is one of the top center prospects for the class of 2019. Currently ranked as the #10 in the country for centers, Matt is getting a lot of attention from big time programs and coaches nationwide.
Standing 7’4 and weighing 220 pounds, Matt changes the game for opposing players and coaches every time he steps on the floor. He really excels at protecting the rim and finishing with either hand around the hoop. He is a solid free throw shooter with good form and mechanics on his shot.
Matt is leading the #2 ranked Pleasant Grove Vikings while averaging 15 PPG and 8 RPG, and is really only beginning to scratch his potential as a basketball player. He has extremely soft touch for a big man. Matt referenced size and length as his best attributes as a player and says, “My ability to shoot 15 footers and change the game defensively is what I am best at.”
Van Komen understands that he is going to have to put on weight and strength to get to where he wants to go, but it is all possible with a tremendous work ethic and determination to be the best player he can be. Matt plays for Utah Prospects in the AAU circuit and is currently being recruited by Oregon, Utah, BYU, and Utah State.
