Northstar Hoops — Team of the Week Jan 2-7
After a mini-break with the holidays, high school hoops was back in full swing last week. There were a handful of surprise/upset wins and a number of big conference/section games as well.
Here are this week’s options for Team of the Week:
St. Francis
The Saints apparently just wanted to wait for the new year to start hitting their stride. They hit it in a big way last week, picking up three wins in a row to snap a six-game losing streak. The Saints beat Irondale Tuesday before knocking off Coon Rapids and Andover Thursday and Saturday.
Minnetonka
The Skippers bounced back after an overtime loss in the Bethel Holiday Tournament with a pair of good wins last week. Minnetonka went on the road and beat Prior Lake Tuesday then capped off the week with a win over Chanhassen.
Robbinsdale Armstrong
The Falcons picked up perhaps the best win in the state Friday night, knocking off No. 3 Park Center in Brooklyn Park. Isaiah Rollins, Davote Saeed-El and Race Thompson combined to score 55 points in that game. That win came on the heels of a 66-64 win over St. Louis Park — another quality Class AAAA team.
Cedar Mountain/Comfrey
The Cougars have been one of the surprise teams in Class A this season, sitting at 7-1 on the year. They picked up two solid road wins last week, beating Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC Tuesday before beating Minnesota Valley Lutheran in New Ulm.
Byron
The Bears picked up one of the big upset wins last week when they knocked off Spring Grove 60-48. The Bears didn’t let that win get to their heads though, as they backed it up with a win over Kasson-Mantorville the very next night. After an 0-4 start to the year, it looks like Byron’s turned things around, as the Bears are 5-1 in their last six games.
Northstar Hoops will put out a Team of the Week story every Monday with several teams people can vote for. People can also nominate teams for those polls by contacting me on twitter at M_Biggs_ or any of the other Northstar Hoops writers such as Ryan James, Jared Martinson or Alex Conover.
