The team furthest east, McDowell High School has proved it is the best almost mid-way through the season. The Titans are off to a 12-2 start overall and 3-0 in conference play. The play of Divese Carson, Skylar McKinney and Tanner Dillingham are big reasons to the success so far. Carson is averaging 15.8 points per game, McKinney is averaging 15.9 per contest and senior Dillingham is averaging 14.8 points per game. The Titans knocked off their toughest opponent in conference, Erwin High School 68-60 earlier this week.
The Warriors of Erwin High School are also off to a good start on the season thanks to the play of All-State wide receiver CJ Thompson who is averaging around 22 points per game. The 5-foot-9 point guard has helped Erwin to a 9-3 record overall and a 2-1 mark in conference.
Tied with Erwin is North Buncombe High School at 2-1 in conference and 10-3 overall on the season. David Elkins has been providing the bulk of the scoring at 16.2 per game and sophomore Tyler McKinney is averaging 15.2 points per game for the Blackhawks.
Reynolds High School is 1-1 overall in the conference but 4-10 overall on the season. With the football team advancing as far as they did in the playoffs, the Rockets have only had a full squad for a little over a month. Point guard Isaiah Pruett is a steady ball-handler and scorer. He played toe-to-toe with another top point guard in the state, Quay Kimble of Shelby HS earlier in the season. Kaedin Robinson is a football player who is also quite the basketball player. He is a big, strong guard who can score the basketball.
Tied with Reynolds High School is Asheville High School at 1-1. The Cougars lost their head coach almost a month before the season started and are being coached on a interim bases. 2017 guard Trey Irby is averaging 14.2 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game. Freshman Tyreke Thompson is averaging 11 points per game and have the Cougars still in striking distance for conference play.
TC Roberson High School and Enka High School round out the conference at 0-2 and 0-3 respectfully.
