We all know about Scotlandville at this point, but East Ascension has a pretty good squad, too, ranking 17th in the most recent rankings released by Chance on this here PrepHoops website. East Ascension is 15-3 with quality wins over teams like Natchitoches Central, H.L. Bourgeois, Comeaux, Dunham and others; not to mention the incredibly excusable losses that came to U High, Rayville and Plaquemine.
Those wins against Bourgeois and Natchitoches Central came in East Ascension’s last two games, so the Spartans are coming into this game hot while Scotlandville took its first loss of the season recently to McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) by one point.
Brusly at U-High
U-High is likely to win, but Brusly’s results to date suggest that this could be one of U-High’s best challenges in district play this season. Brusly’s wins over teams such as St. Louis Catholic and West Feliciana make a decent case for it. (The back-to-back losses to Berwick and North Vermilion in its last two games debunk my case, I know.)
St. Augustine at Holy Cross
As I mentioned in this week’s High Five, this is one of Holy Cross’ first true tests of the season. If nothing else, stop by this game just to see if Holy Cross is for real or not in the Division I outlook. (Plus, St. Aug is really, really good.)
Brother Martin at John Curtis
This is a rematch of a pretty entertaining game earlier this year, a five-point win for Curtis on Dec. 9. It’s also the district opener for both teams for two of the better teams in the district and could be telling of where Curtis is as a team going into its showdown at St. Aug later this week.
Lincoln Prep at Plain Dealing
Lincoln Prep and Arcadia look like the two clear-cut favorites in District 1-1A, but a small part of me wonders if Plain Dealing can upset that status quo a little bit. I’m not saying Plain Dealing is going to win three of its four games against those two or anything, but I don’t think it’s impossible for that team to pull one upset and single-handedly change some things in 1A’s playoff bracket positioning as they go.
Delhi at Delhi Charter
These crosstown rivals meet again, for the first time since the season-opening win for Delhi Charter. Both teams have been wildly successful since then – Delhi Charter was one of the three last unbeatens left in the state while Delhi is starting to look like a 1A state title contender – and this is jut the beginning of a grueling District 2-1A schedule for both teams. This might be my favorite game on this schedule.
Other games of note
