I’m willing to go on the record and predict this as a Top 28 preview in Class C. I think both of these teams will make it, and with any luck we can guarantee a rematch by having these two play in the semifinals. Summerfield beat Gibsland-Coleman 62-56 earlier this year and since garnered another quality win over the Division V favorite Jehovah-Jireh, while Gibsland-Coleman hasn’t lost since that first meeting with Summerfield on Dec. 9, basically six weeks ago.
Family Christian at Jehovah-Jireh
Speaking of Top 28 previews, I think we have another one here for Division V. Jehovah-Jireh is one of the favorites to win it all and Family Christian is currently No. 4 in the power rankings. Family Christian’s schedule doesn’t impress me as much as some others in Division V, so I’m curious to see how they stack up here with a team that has proven its championship caliber at every turn this season.
Metairie Park Country Day at Riverside
No. 2 at No. 3 in Division III; need I say more? Riverside comes in on a three-game winning streak and Country Day would be on a five-game streak if not for the perfectly explainable loss to De La Salle a week ago.
Sicily Island at Tensas
I’m going to talk more about Sicily Island in Monday’s High Five, so stay tuned for that, but that’s one of the hottest small-school teams in the state – and they go on the road against a team that was in the Top 28 last year.
East Ascension at St. Amant
The No. 2 team in the state in 5A goes on the road in what I think might be its most significant opportunity to take an L. (The trip to McKinley in a week is another notable opportunity.)
Central Lafourche at Terrebonne/Carencro at St. Thomas More
None of these teams move the needle as championship contenders in their respective classes (with the exception of St. Thomas More in Division II) but all four factor to be playoff teams and teams that can sway power points positionings somewhat significantly. I also grouped these two together because, outside of STM, these are teams to watch down the stretch as the race to the playoffs settles itself.
Hamilton Christian at Grand Lake
Hamilton Christian is a bottom half of the top five team in Division IV; Grand Lake is the same in 1A. Classic measuring stick game for both teams.
