We have a new entrant this week into the Cincinnati area top 10 for this week. Fortunately for the teams within the top 10 there was not much movement elsewhere within the rankings. But with that being said that does not mean that there were not some good and thrilling victories to be had. Here is the top 10 for the week of January 23rd:
- Moeller (15-0, 2-0), Previous Rank: 1- Another solid week for the Crusaders that ended with a 2-0 finish with wins over GCL rival St. Xavier and a 3 point over a very good Springfield High team. This week finds Coach Kremer’s team on the road again with games at conference rival Elder and a trip to Wilmington,
Upcoming Schedule: 1/27 at Elder, 7:30pm; 1/28 at Wilmington, 7:30pm
- Summit (13-0, 7-0), Previous Rank: 2- The Silver Knights remain undefeated after beating North College Hill by eight points on Friday. The eight point margin of victory was the smallest margin Summit has won by so far this year. Expect Summit to be involved in more close games this week as play a very strong Cincinnati Christian team on Tuesday along with a home game against 9th ranked Taft on Saturday 1/28. Many in the Cincinnati question just how good Coach Pat Cosgrove team is and this week will go a long way in answering that question.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 at Cincinnati Christian, 7:30pm; 1/27 vs. New Miami, 7:30pm; 1/28 vs. #9 Taft, 7:30pm
- La Salle (12-2, 1-1), Previous Rank: 3- The Lancers are 3-0 since there lost to Moeller, their only loss in the Cincinnati area this year. It may no coincidence that this 3 game winning streak coincided with the return of CJ Fleming, who is averaging 20 points per game during this 3-game stretch. Saturday’s game against Walnut Hills could prove to be one of the better games of the week.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/27 at St. Xavier, 7:30pm; 1/28 at Walnut Hills, 7:30pm
- Oak Hills (12-2, 8-0), Previous Rank: 4- The Highlanders just might be the best defensive team in the Cincinnati area. So far this year no team has reached 60 points against Oak Hills while only two teams have scored over 50 points. Their defense will be put to the test this week with matchups against two top 10 teams.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 at #10 Lakota East, 7:30pm; 1/27 vs. Mason, 7:30pm
- Mason (11-1, 7-1), Previous Rank: 5- Comets Nation have had this week, in particular this Friday, circled on their calendar since their December 16th lose to Oak Hills. Not only did the win drop Mason one game behind the Highlanders, they lost the game at home. But before the Comets can focus on Oak Hills they must take care of Middletown first on Tuesday. If the Comets get past the Middies, Friday’s matchup will go a long way in determining not only the conference champion but also tournament seeding.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 vs. Middletown, 7:30pm; 1/27 at #4 Oak Hills, 7:30pm
- Wyoming (13-0, 7-0), Previous Rank: 6- Coach Edmonds team continues to quietly win and win and win and win, I think you get my point. It can be argued that they even in this poll they are ranked too low. Senior guard and Army commit Lonnie Grayson is averaging 25.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4 assist per game over the last 6 games. Tuesday’s game against Indian Hills is a rematch of the second game of the season in which the Wyoming won by 7 back on December 9th. And the Cowboys should be aware of a very talented Mt. Healthy coming to Wyoming on Saturday January 28th.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 at Indian Hills, 7:30pm; 1/27 vs. Taylor, 7:30pm; 1/28 vs. Mt. Healthy, 7:30pm
- Roger Bacon (13-2, 4-1), Previous Rank: 7- The Spartans have won four in a row, all on the road with the last of those wins against former tenth ranked Woodward on Saturday by 20. In the wins against the Bulldogs Bacon had 3 players with 15 or more points including senior G Craig McGee who finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assist.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/27 vs. Chaminade Julienne, 7:30pm
- Hughes (12-3, 6-0), Previous Rank: 8- Corry Long’s 3rd buzzer-beater of January on Saturday against Indian Hills extended Big Red win streak to 10 with a 55-54 victory. Junior guard Giovanni Santiago is averaging 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.4 assist per game since becoming eligible January 6th. Santiago is also 20 for 20 from the free throw line in 5 games.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/27 at Western Hills, 7:30pm
- Taft (13-1, 5-1), Previous Rank: 9- The Senators face two road test this against former 10th ranked Woodward on Friday and 2nd ranked Summit on Saturday. The Senators are still considered by many as an odds on favorite to make to Columbus out of Cincinnati and a 2-0 week will only make those odds better.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/27 at Woodward, 7:30pm; 1/28 at Summit Country Day, 7:30pm
- Lakota East (10-4, 6-2), Previous Rank: 10- East has won 5 in a row since their January 3rd loss to Mason. The Thunderhawks are led by the duo of Jarett Cox and Evan Kuhlman who combined to average 36.6 points per game this season. Their Tuesday night matchup against Oak Hills could prove to be a very good matchup.
Upcoming Schedule: 1/24 vs. Oak Hills, 7:30pm; 1/27 vs. Sycamore, 7:30pm
