MVP
PG Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park – 2018)
The state’s top 2018 prospect wasn’t completely dominant like we have seen so many times, but he was without a doubt the best player on the floor. Dosunmu used his speed and size at 6’4” to attack the cup off the bounce and get in the lane where he scored with acrobatic layups. His combination of speed and body control at the rim make him a significantly tough cover when taking it to the rim. Explosive first step. Didn’t really even attempt to use his outside shot. Made several nice passes and was active on the defensive end. He had 12 points.
Play of the game
The play that sealed the win was a late steal by Morgan Park and a dunk by Lenell Henry to put Morgan Park up by three late which ultimately became the final score.
Best offensive performance
SF Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon – 2018)
THT was hot early with a pair of threes off the catch. The state’s top 2018 small forward picked up his third foul in the second quarter and had to sit out the rest of the first half. In the second half he played well. Especially with his passing making several great dishes. Also slashed to the rim getting in the lane where he finished at the cup. Horton-Tucker had 13 points. High-major prospect.
Best defensive performance
PF Messiah Jones (Simeon – 2018)
Jones made a major impact on this one early with his activity level on the interior rebounding and blocking shots. Once he picked up his second foul he was sidelined the rest of the half. Morgan Park then went to work on the boards. When he came back in the second half he was a presence protecting the rim with his shot blocking. Also had a big alley-oop tip in. Knocked down all of his free throws. The top post in the 2018 class had 8 points and 4 blocks. Mid-major prospect.
Best rebounder
PF Lenell Henry (Morgan Park – 2017)
Henry was the best rebounder in this game. Once Messiah Jones went out with foul trouble Henry began to dominate the interior on the glass. Long and angular 6’7” power forward. High points rebounds and won 50/50 balls in this game. Got on the glass for a put back. Also altered some shots around the rim. Should be on the high D2 radar.
Best passer
PG Kejuan Clements (Simeon – 2019)
Clements is a slick handling lead guard that knows how to get to the rack. Was aggressive early in the game. Has speed in the open floor and loves to attack downhill. Solid passer getting others involved. Clements had 8 points.
Best catch and shoot guy
PG Cam Irvin (Morgan Park – 2017)
Irvin might not be the biggest or be a true point guard, but man can this kid flat out shoot the rock! He has consistently buried threes throughout his senior year from deep. Money from three off the catch with a quick release. He had 14 points. Needs to be on the D3/NAIA/JUCO radar.
Best guy off the bench
PG Marcus Watson (Morgan Park – 2020)
Hello freshman! Welcome to the PrepHoops radar. We had not heard much about this freshman guard, but the lefty was impactful early especially in the first half. Had a nose for the ball, quick in traffic, and hit a mid-range jumper. Scored 6 points.
Best intangibles
PG Evan Gilyard (Simeon – 2017 – UTEP)
Gilyard struggled early in the game to finish at the rim. The quick and shifty lefty was wild and couldn’t get his shots to fall. Started to get it going later in the first half with a couple aggressive takes to the cup. Then went down with an injury right before the half that sidelined him for part of the second half. He did come back in the second half. Finished with 9 points.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Kezo Brown (Simeon – 2018)
Brown has had a bounce back campaign for the Wolverines. The lefty shooting guard can be a bit of a streaky perimeter shooter which was shown in this game. He started to turn the defensive intensity up a notch in the second half turning steals into points. Brown had 12 points.
Best underclassmen
SG Nimari Burnett (Morgan Park – 2020)
Burnett is a talented freshman that is one of the best 2020’s in the state. He didn’t score a ton, but made an impact in this game with his defense. The freshman has quick hands and got several deflections. Burnett is a D1 prospect.
Other Scouting
SG LJ Johnson (Morgan Park – 2019)
Johnson started off quick with a top of the key three. This is an area that we would like to see more consistency out of the young wing. Unfortunately he bricked another one not too long after. The sophomore stands at 6’2” with tremendous strength and athleticism. The skill just needs to come around. He had 5 points.
PF Melo Burrell (Morgan Park – 2017)
Burrell was solid as a rebounder in this one. The 6’7” four man is a big time athlete that isn’t overly skilled. He did have a big dunk late to seal the win. Finished with 2 points. Should be on the D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO radar with his upside and projectability. Project kid that could be worth investing time in.
