Three Up
Osseo. Haven’t heard much about them yet huh? The Orioles are kind of laying in the weeds but they are usually a 20 win level team. Zach Theisen is scoring 22 a night and they’ve beat Hermantown, Duluth East, Irondale, and Minneapolis Roosevelt by solid margins. That said they lost to Park Center by 21. How good are they? Upcoming games with Cooper and Stillwater should shed some light.
Bemidji. In case you didn’t notice, and judging by the online world you haven’t, the Lumberjacks have managed to win quite a few so far this year for a 5-1 record. They’ve beat Apollo, Sartell, and Detroit Lakes for their five game winning streak. Bemidji senior shooter Caden Rolfes is one of the better players in northern Minnesota that few know. Rolfes is a good shooter but also very tough and disciplined on both ends. He and junior Linwaes Whiting are leading the way.
Roseau. The Rams won 4 four games last year but have 5 wins this season! No, Coach Ken Hayden isn’t getting athletes to play both sports at once (you know what I mean), he’s simply got some nice players in Jacob LePard, Nels Braaten, and Eric Hoffer. In fact Hoffer is in his second year as starting point guard and he’s just a sophomore. Nice little player that is putting Roseau on the hoops map! So far Roseau has beat Frazee, Park Rapids, Kittson County Central, Warroad, and Badger/Greenbush-Middle River so they aren’t just beating slouches.
Three Down
Eden Prairie. Expected the Eagles to be better than a year ago but so far they are showing to be that .500 level team they were a year ago (that did make state by the way). The schedule is difficult of course but they are also the biggest school in the state by a large amount. The Rebels of CP beat them by 22, a struggling Lakeville South team beat them by 11, and they lost a tough game to Wayzata in overtime. Things don’t get much easier with Edina, Chaska (maybe twice), Jefferson, and Cretin-Derham Hall coming up in the next 2-3 weeks.
Red Wing. We thought maybe with a good solid program for many years the JV guys would come to varsity and step in playing tough. They have played some games tough nearly beating Austin and taking Mankato East to overtime but the Wingers were also smoked by JM and the only win is by 13 over Century. Games with Byron and Mankato East are up coming before the Kasson-Mantorville and Albert Lea stretch of winless teams.
Albany. It’s been a long time since the Huskies from Albany struggled to an 0-5 start. Not only winless but losing to Milaca by 21 and Foley by eight. They have a tougher schedule than most teams in Class AA but even the teams they usually beat have beat them pretty good. Also, Rocori knocked Albany off by 29! Things won’t get easier with Sauk Rapids-Rice and Big Lake being the upcoming games. Albany did lose a lot from a senior dominated team so a tough spot was expected. Ethan Hylla is a nice player for them.
