The first half saw both Michael Jones of Woodbury and Camden Jackson of St. Cloud Tech hit four treys. It also saw Jeremiah Coddon and Brevyn Spann-Ford put together excellent all around games. Both Coddon and Spann-Ford picked it up for more second half production.
The difference between Woodbury and Tech? The Royals had the three players score consistently and then go the other way and limit Jackson in half two as well as everybody else (besides Brevyn).
MVP: Michael Jones. Michael Jones is another level of a player than I understood after watching him play this summer. He’s a higher percentage shooter than I knew, is better with a dribble facing up than I knew, tougher than I knew, and more agile than I knew. Scored his 24 points on 7 of 15 shooting including five treys and excellent at the foul line.
Best Offensive Performance: Brevyn Spann-Ford. Brevyn is a strong but versatile athlete that is as comfortable with the ball in his hands as say Race Thompson. Can handle pushing up the floor, beats wings off the dribble, too strong for most high school players, and has great vision. 20 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists.
Best Defensive Performance: Woodbury D everywhere. You can’t just pick out one guy, the Royals locked everybody down in half two that didn’t have a double last name. Strong effort from Nolan Glunz from start to finish, Coddy was good and so was Ike Thilgren.
Best Guy Off the Bench: Max Martig. Max provided Tech with energy on defense, made two of his three shots, and boarded four times.
Best Under the Radar Performance: Ike Thilgren. Knocked out three treys and scored 15 giving Coddon another weapon to use on the opposite side of Jones. Stretched the defense with his feet set makes.
Best Underclassmen: Nate Trewick. Only underclassmen that played. Hit a three in the few minutes he played, also had an assist.
Best Story to watch Moving Forward: Can Camden Jackson keep this up? For Tech to play at the level of the best in the state they need to have more dependable scorers. Jackson gave that to this team in the first half but not in half two. He seems like the most likely candidate going forward.
Best Aspect of the Environment: The Jones vs Spann-Ford back and forth. Both players had strong runs of play ad it wasn’t just scoring. Michael and Brevin rebounded and moved the ball to others.
Best Prospect: Brevyn Spann-Ford. If we are talking football we are likely talking Big Ten. Seems like a nice fit to be the next excellent Gopher tight end from Minnesota (the list is long). But if he played college hoops Brevyn seems like a guy that could be great at a low major and at least solid at a mid-major.
Other: Jeremiah Coodon. His steady play was something that really impressed. Nothing forced, always composed. Read the floor well and moved the ball perfectly to feet set shooters, cutters, and the next guy in the rotating ball movement. Scored 15 with seven boards and five assists. Tough kid that bulled his way to some scores and assists.
