KANSAS CITY — The opening game of the Hy-Vee Shootout at Avila University was lopsided throughout as Blue Springs South took control and raced to a big lead at the half and cruised to a turbo clock win. Sumner played hard and gave BSS a battle at times, but the bigger and deeper Jaguars controlled the paint and the contest.
MVP: Camron Roustic (BSS). A 5’10 2017 point guard, Roustic controlled the game throughout. He finished with 10 points, handed out a game-high six assists and chipped in four rebounds in 21 minutes.
LEFT: Offensive Player of the Game: DiCarlo Jackson (Sumner): Finished with 17 points on 6 of 17 shooting from the field and 5 of 9 shooting from the free throw line. He had several impressive moves in the second half and made some plays off the dribble.
Defensive Player of the Game: Ethan Swanegan (BSS). A long, 6’7 2018, Swanegan probably didn’t have his best game at the offensive end of the court, finishing with four points on 2 of 9 shooting, but showcased his versatility at the defensive end as he matched up with Sumner guards Vance Jackson and DiCarlo Jackson throughout the game.
Best shooter: Jared Ravenkamp (BSS). A 6’1 2017 guard, Ravenkamp is the Jagaurs best outside threat. He was just 1 for 4 from 3 in this contest, but 4 for 8 overall and showed a nice outside shooting touch en route to 10 points.
Best rebounder: Caden Mauck (BSS). An agile 6’6 2017 big man, Mauck led both teams with seven rebounds. He was active on the baseline and in the paint for the Jaguards against an undersized Sumner squad.
Best passer: Camron Roustic (BSS). This was is easy to be frank. Sumner had just four assists as a team as they went one-on-one far too often while BSS finished with 19, led by Roustic. He has a nice handle and all-around game, including the ability to find open teammates.
Underclassman: Alan Watson (Sumner). Was really the only underclassman to play at all. BSS roster featured 15 juniors and seniors, and nothing else. A diminutive 5’5 2019 guard, Watson had seven points, two steals and drew a pair of charges.
Name to remember: Caden Mauck (BSS). See above.
Play of the Game: A near slam by DiCarlo Jackson with 5:41 remaining in the game. The 6’0 2018 guard went baseline and attempted a one-handed slam while being fouled hard.
Best guy off the bench: Jaren Zimmerman (BSS). A 6’0 2017, Zimmerman came in to score nine quick points in just nine minutes of action. He went 4 of 6 from the field including a 3 ball.
