Last season as a freshman on an 18-win team he averaged 8.7 points per game. And he spent his 15U summer leading a very talented Martin Brothers 15U squad.
This season through three games, he’s averaging 17 points on 58 percent shooting and is 8-13 from deep.
Certain Midwest Division I programs have taken notice.
“I’ve talked to South Dakota and I’ve been to UNI’s camp. I’ve talked to NDSU. I’ve been down to Iowa twice now. And I’ve gotten a letter from Nebraska,” said Vanderloo, who still has three years left to see his recruitment materialize.
“It’s (recruitment) always in the back of my head, and I think about it from time to time. But I really want to play in the state tournament. I haven’t done that yet, so I’m just more focused on winning games, and getting down there would be my biggest goal.”
With an already stellar skill-set in place, Vanderloo has picked up a reputation as being on of the state’s hardest working players.
“I’ve been working a lot on my scoring ability since last year,” said Vanderloo. “I could score the ball last season, but I was more of just a 3-point shooter. This year I’ve picked up more of a scoring role, so I’m coming off screens and scoring in many more ways than I used to.”
Last season as a freshman he was coming off the bench as the Black Raiders’ sixth-man — this season he’s starting, and starring.
“Really what they’re expecting out of me is just to help the team win,” said Vanderloo. “We have three really good scorers. And what they (coaches) told me is that I need to score points, ya, but if I need to hustle or guard, I just need to get done what needs to get done.”
