The Favorites
Brad Davison. In the recent loss to Park Center Brad’s team took a bit of a hit with the loss and a loss always hurts a major award. That said, Brad had a team high 19 points, a team high 9 rebounds, a team high 8 assists, and a team high 2 steals. So if you are going to lose a game, giving a near triple-double is the way to go out.
McKinley Wright. My prediction in this year’s Breakdown book was McKinley winning because A) usually goes to a AAAA player, B) usually goes to a guard, and C) usually goes to a guy on a winner. McKinley is all of those things and his team is still number one (the clear number one). Wright had 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists stuffing the stat sheet in a quick hammering of EP.
Final Five For Sure
Nathan Reuvers. Lakeville North had a tough loss to Apple Valley this week and when the game was in its key points Reuvers shot 3 of 16 from the floor. Nathan had three late three-pointers to get him to five threes for the game and a 25 point night with 9 rebounds plus five blocks so the numbers were good. But Reuvers had trouble shooting early.
Goanar Mar. Not much to say about Goanar right now as his team has been off for a week and they are coming off a hammering of St. Agnes. Goanar is averaging 24 a game for the Islanders who play BSM tonight and then have a huge game against IMG Academy over the break in the Mike Miller Classic.
Top Contenders
Trae Berhow. The Royals are 4-0 and Berhow had that amazing 30 points, 25 boards, and 7 assists in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic. Since then they’ve had one game against Hutchinson that the Royals won 74-52.
Theo John. John controlled another big game in the middle recently when EP had nobody that could deal with the Marquette signed talent. Theo put up 16 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, and continues to move the ball well out of the post totaling five assists.
Other Contenders
Ishmael El-Amin. El-Amin wasn’t playing in the loss to Edina last week which shows the importance of him to his team. The Royals were blitzed in the second half and El-Amin wasn’t available to help his team keep up offensively. He’s been better defensively too but no Ishmael around when Walt McGrory went off.
Jericho Sims. Cristo Rey dropped a key Class A game to Heritage Christian this week by 15 points dropping them to 2-2 on the year. In the loss Sims had just 13 points.
Simon Wright. Wright had 13 against the Hornets and couldn’t stop the Hornets from getting a win over the #2 ranked Royals (at that point).
Myles Hanson. Weather related cancelling of games means that Hanson and the Hawks haven’t play since the last Race for Mr. Buckets article. They finally get back on the court tonight against Eastview. Hanson is averaging 22 a contest.
Jordan Horn. The Titans improved to 4-0 on the year with a nine point win over Burnsville. Jordan had 15 in the victory. The Titans have a holiday event coming up which will be a chance to see Jordan and then after that the next high profile viewing will be against Mahtomedi on January 13th.
Walt McGrory. See the special section below.
What About?
Walt McGrory of Edina. This is a little bit of a stronger “what about” than usual. Walt’s six three-point make explosion in the second half of a marque win over Hopkins put him on the radar of everybody in what was a moment that Mr. Basketball candidates have. McGrory had the 31 against Hopkins, 33 points versus BSM on Tuesday, and don’t forget the 30 versus Shakopee. 30 pus in three of four games putting Edina in the top ten of Class AAAA and Walt on the Mr. Basketball watch list.
What About? Part 2 – Senior to Know
Losini Kamara of Park Center. Have a look see who is top five in the state and metro rankings now? That would be Park Center. Leading the way is D1 signed talent Losini Kamara who is headed to Idaho next year. For the Pirates it’s a team effort. The backcourt group of Kamara, Khari Broadway, Derrick Ogechi, and Jarius Cook has been very good plus freshman big Dain Dainja has been strong early. That said Kamara had 18 against Davison in Park Center’s big win over Maple Grove.
What About? Part 3
Parker Fox. The Mahtomedi Zephyrs are 4-0 and Parker has exploded not just for 29 points per game but a lot of highlights that high level players make. His 41 point game at Monticello in the Matt Todd/Parker Fox battle was big and then he had 32 against Chisago Lakes as well.
