The GCL South has a long history of producing great teams that play top-notch schedules that help their teams prepare for tournament time. It is because of this tradition of playing a top-notch schedule that conference games are usually slated for after the New Year, which is why no team in the conference has played a conference game as of yet. But that does not mean that the conference race will not be heated race as La Salle and Moeller look to be the two clear cut favorites in the conference.
Moeller, the number one ranked Division I team in Cincinnati, already has quality wins against number two ranked Oak Hills and the number one ranked team in Northern Kentucky Covington Catholic. While La Salle has not played as tough a schedule, they are serving notice that they are one of the top programs in greater Cincinnati outscoring their opponents 217-108 in their first three games. The schedule for the Lancers gets tougher as they play in a holiday tournament in Florida then returning for a home game at Elder on January 6th. Look for the January 13th matchup between the Lancers and the Crusaders to go a very long in determining the conference and possibly city championship for that matter.
The January match-up may also be a factor in the conference POY race with CJ Fleming of La Salle and Keegan McDowell of Moeller seem to lead the pack in that race as well. While not a factor in the conference race, look for Elder and St. Xavier to be a factor come playoff time. Playing tough games in December and January usually pays off in February/March and both teams played tough non-conference slates that could yield big dividends in the future.
Predicted Standings:
Moeller
La Salle
Elder
St. Xavier
