Josh’s grandfather Steve Cottrell had a 145-133 record in 10 seasons as coach at WCU from 1977 to 1988. The younger brother of Appalachian State guard Zach Cottrell, Josh will suit up for Western Carolina University when his high school career is over.
His dad Michael is the head coach at Hayesville High School, he coached both sons and played at Lenior-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. He was a standout at Cullowhee High School near Sylva. He has the record for WNC’s all-time leading scorer among high school players with 2,503 points and led Hayesville to the NCHSAA 1-A state title in 2014.
Josh is averaging 26.8 points per game this season for Hayesville High School which plays in the tough Big Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference. He also had a steady list of interest coming from The College of Charleston, Furman, Wofford, Appalachian State, and UT-Chattanooga before choosing the Catamounts and Head Coach Larry Hunter.
With the younger brother committing to Western Carolina, it will surely make some news in the mountains. Western Carolina and Appalachian State have a fierce rivalry between the two schools regardless. Now with older brother Zach playing for former Davidson assistant Jim Fox and Josh heading to Cullowhee, it will surely add to that fire.
