Opening night of the Freetaxusa.com Shootout saw the Utah teams split wins with the out of state teams. Here is our recap of all the games:
Mountain View (AZ) 68 Kearns 54
In the opening game of the tournament Mountain View proved to be to much for the in-state Kearns High School. The game was tied at 15 after the first quarter but then Mountain View slowly extended their lead. They were lead by Nick Sessions 31 points as he dominated the game from start to finish. Kearns was lead by senior guard Nick Vallas and his 16 points.
Springville 54 British Columbia Christian (Canada) 42
In the second game, Springville jumped out to a 14 point halftime lead and then hung on for a 12 point win over the team from Canada. Springville played excellent defense in shutting down the British Columbia Christian team who had a huge size advantage. 5’10 guard Josh Elison lead Springville with 17 points including two three pointers.
Timpview 61 Smoky Hill (CO) 60
The third game was the most exciting game of the day. In a back in forth battle, Timpview found a way to pick up the win. Junior guard Hunter Erickson has shown this year that he is among the best in the state. He lead Timpview with 23 points putting his scoring average at 27 points per game thus far this season. Jordan Sagers and Adam Santiago were also in double figure with 12 and 11 respectfully.
Wakefield (VA) 79 Orem 60
In the final game of the night at Orem High School, the team from Virginia had too much firepower for an overmatched Orem team. At the half Orem actually held a 33-29 lead but the third quarter saw Wakefield outscore Orem 23-5. Alan Treakle lead Wakefield with 28 points.For Orem, Sophomore guard Puka Nacua had 22 points in the loss.
Wasatch Academy 71 Lone Peak 58 (At Wasatch Academy)
The much more talented Tigers of Wasatch Academy held on for a 13 point win on their home court. Lone Peak fought back and tried to cut the lead but the Tigers were too much. Damion Squire lead Wasatch with 19 points and Emmanuel Akot chipped in with 17. Lone Peak was lead by Nate Harkness and his 19 points. Steven Ashworth also had 18 points.
