Derrick’s Dimes: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic Day 1 Notebook.
The Holiday tournament week kicked off with the 43rd Annual Jack Tosh Holiday classic at York High School in Elmhurst. The 32 Team tournament runs Dec. 26th – Dec 30th. With games running on two courts the Prep Hoops staff was able to see a lot of action on day 1. Here is a look into my notebook with Derrick’s Dimes from Court 2.
Day 1 Standouts:
Matt Brcka- Wheaton North 2017 G/F – 16 points 4-5 from 3
Jack Bennett- Wheaton North 2017 G/F 15 points 3-4 from 3
Jonny Butler-Minooka 2017 G 21 points 9-12 from the field.
Daniel Michelon Highland Park 2018 G22 points 6-10 from 3
Stone Parker-De La Salle 2017 G 27 points 4 rebs 4 asts
David Pinskus-De La Salle 2018 F 16 points
Ryne Singsank- Elk Grove 2019 F 17 points 8 rebs
Wheaton North 86- Rolling Meadows 53
Wheaton North shot lights out to handle Rolling Meadows rather easily. Senior guard Matt Brcka led the way with 16 points going 4-5 from three and Senior guard Jack Bennett also chipped in 15 points on 3-4 from long range. Overall the Wheaton North team went 57% from 3.
An intriguing Prospect to track at Wheaton North will be 2019 6’6 Sophomore Deng Reng. Reng had a monster block in this matchup flashing good athleticism. Showed the ability to hit the mid-range jump shot, and also had some nice drives to the basket.
Minooka 49 – Nazareth 39
Minooka got off to a hot start opening up the game with a 17-0 run sparked by Senior Jonny Butler. The two sport standout also stars on the baseball diamond but was making plays on the court. Butler is a hard noised player who doesn’t mind banging down low with the post players. He knew how to work his spots, and was money from the high post. He finished with a game high 21 points on 9-12 shooting in the win for Minooka.
Highland Park 61 – Timothy Christian 50
With Timothy Christian leading at the half 26-24. 2018 Highland Park Sharpshooter Daniel Michelon took off with a hot third quarter that included 4 triples to spark a run for Highland Park. The 5’10 Junior plays with extreme confidence knocking down key shots at key times to hold onto the lead and win 61-50. Michelon and Highland Park move on to face De La Salle next.
De La Salle 72 – Elk Grove 71
In a contrast of style with De La Salle’s up tempo guard play, and pressure defense vs Elk Grove’s tough post play. This was a back and forth matchup between the two. With De La Salle up 28-26 at the half both teams picked up the pace offensively especially 2017 De La Salle guard Stone Parker who had 16 in the second half to propel De La Salle over Elk Grove. Parker is a quick athletic guard who loves to work the mid-range jump shot or dribble drive to the basket. His biggest basket came with less than a minute to play, Parker drove the lane in transition and finished with an and 1 basket to give De La Salle the lead. Parker finished with a game high 27 points. 2018 6’7 Junior provided help off the bench with 16 points and stepped up big defensively when needed against Elk Grove’s post players.
Elk Grove stayed in the game with a strong performance from 2019 F Ryne Singsank who led Elk Grove with 17 points and 8 Rebounds. The sophomore was solid working the pick and roll and finding his spots in the post.
