If there was one player that I was looking forward to see at the event it was definitely this young man, and he did not disappoint one bit. Now this is not the first time I’ve had a chance to see Zion play, my first encounter with him was 2 summers ago when he was playing with the SC Hornets alongside Ole Miss Signee Devante Shuler. At the time Zion was under the radar but really began to get a lot of buzz to his name after playing very well that summer, schools began to recruit and offer and he continued to improve at a very high rate. Throughout this year he has been dominant in various camps and throughout the high school season, there was questions about the level of competition of course so seeing him against national level competition was something we all wanted to see.
Record Breaking Performance
To say he played well at the Chick-Fil-A classic would be an understatement, he was absolutely dominant throughout the event, starting with a 53 Points & 16 Rebound game vs Grays Collegiate which feature various High Major D1 players. Even in the third game of the tournament playing with tired legs and against a team that feature players that have signed to: Michigan State, VT and Kentucky, he still put together an impressive performance with 35 Points and 9 Rebounds. After his final game it was announced that he had broken the Chick-Fil-A tournament record for points in 3 games.
What makes him special?
Zion is much more than a dunker and is a player that could fit into a system very well, he has excellent upper body strength and moves without the ball well. He can knock down the midrange shot but doesn’t settle for jumpers, instead he is constantly attacking and keeping the defense on their heels. He’s the type of player that can grab a rebound, go the full length of the floor and make a play, a modern comparison for Zion would be Draymond Green of the Warriors. Most importantly Zion is a great kid, he’s very respectful, a good teammate and simply wants to do whatever it takes to win.
