Class of 2018 combo forward Ethan Schuemer has some momentum after a strong July and has continued that into the season. Willowbrook dominated for most of the night, but Morton cut into the lead a bit late with their press. In the end Willowbrook got the road win 64-52.
MVP
F Ethan Schuemer (Willowbrook – 2018)
Schuemer was the reason we attended this game and he made us not regret our decision one bit. The 6’5” combo forward played outstanding right from the jump. Schuemer is a versatile and skilled forward that can play both on the interior and works well in the mid-range. Schuemer makes quick moves on the interior against the opposition whether they are in man or zone. Soft touch around the basket and uses the glass well. He was perfect from the field in the first half including a mid-range jumper. Good feel scoring in the paint and can finish through contact. Will need to continuing adding strength for the next level, but he has the body to do so. Also drilled all of his free throws on the night. Very fundamentally sound offensive player that can pass it and handles it well from the mid-range in. The next step in his evolution offensively is playing more consistently on the perimeter. For him to max out his ability he will either have to grow a few more inches to become a post or he will need to continue to develop his perimeter game playing the three. He has the skill level to do so. He is already outstanding as a rebounder. Schuemer has a feel for where they are coming off the glass and high points them. The junior finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Mid-major and low-majors need to start monitoring him. Stock going up!
Best offensive performance
Ethan Scheumer was without question the most skilled offensive player.
Best defensive performance
PG Malik Jones (Morton – 2017)
Jones is a thick bodied point guard that has some versatility. The lefty hit a catch and shoot three. Also got after it on the defensive end. He was the guy that got steals and turned them into transition points. Jones had 11 points. Small college kid.
Best rebounder
Ethan Schuemer grabbed 16 rebounds in the contest. He was dominant on the glass.
Best passer
PG Freddie Clay (Willowbrook – 2017)
Clay came off the bench to really get his teammates involved. The senior is a scrappy player that plays with a motor. Dishes it well putting his teammates in positions to succeed.
Best catch and shoot guy
SG Matas Masys (Willowbrook – 2019)
Masys is a creative wing that handles the ball well and drilled several floaters. Hit a catch and shoot three. The sophomore 7 points.
Best guy off the bench
PG Marshawn Phillips (Willowbrook – 2018)
Phillips came off the bench to provide a spark scoring. Tough guard that can hit a three and uses strength in the lane. Competitive guard. Phillips had 11 points.
Best intangibles
PG Sikander Zafar (Willowbrook – 2018)
Zafar is a combo guard with some strength. The junior is constantly moving and showed a variety of skills, but nothing consistent. Corner three, good transition pass, solid defender. Zafar had 6 points.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Vinny Belcaster (Morton – 2018)
Something was just off about Belcaster on Tuesday. He seemed a bit under the weather and his legs just weren’t there. The usually lethal shooter didn’t connect on a three in the game and struggled at the line. On the plus side he was aggressive taking the ball to the hoop. Had a couple runners that he converted. Grinded out several other drives where he seeked contact and finished and-1’s or got to the line. Belcaster had 14 points.
Best underclassmen
PG Detalian Brown (Morton – 2019)
Brown is a young guard that flashes potential. The combo guard hit a three and also proved he could handle the basketball. Brown had a sweet spinning and-1. Rebounds well for his size as he got a pair of put backs. Brown had 11 points.
