Continue ReadingA battle of two of the top perennial 3-A private schools in North Carolina took place Friday night in Arden, North Carolina at the campus of Christ School. Wesleyan Christian (7-1) came into the game ranked #6 in the latest MaxPreps Top 25. Christ School (6-2) would end up prevailing on a tip in at the buzzer by Coleman High to get the win 78-76.
MVP: Damon Harge Jr- Without a doubt the biggest difference maker in this game was the junior point guard who transferred from Orlando Christian Prep. He scored 21 points, dished out 8 assists and had zero turnovers in the close game. He controlled the ball from the start breaking down defenders to find open teammates or penetrating the lane to score. This was one of the best performances that I have seen from Harge Jr., so far this season.
Play of the Game: With the game tied with 7 second remaining, Coleman High in-bounded the basketball 94 feet away from the basket to Damon Harge who dribbled the entire length of the court but missed a shot that bounced off the rim right into the hands of High who tipped the ball back in for the win at the buzzer.
Offensive MVP: Jaylen Horde- The native of France in his first season playing basketball in the states scored at will throughout the game. He finished with 30 points on a variety of shots. It is easy to see why so many scouting services have Hoard ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Defensive MVP: Ian Steere: The Trojans big man was a force in the paint and made it difficult for the Greenies to get many looks from the post. He blocked shots and recovered big rebounds throughout the game. He is 6-foot-8 and close to 240 pounds.
Best Guy off the Bench: Kojack Thompson– The 2019 guard did a great job of getting Damon Harge Jr., breathers throughout the game. He scored 4 points but they came at crucial times and kept Harge rested and provided a skilled ball-handling presence when the starter was not in the game.
Best Intangibles: Damon Harge Jr- Harge was flawless against the Trojans. Grabbed loose balls, made big shots, forced his way to getting key steals. Harge, in short was all over the floor throughout the game. He was the difference maker with his intangibles that cannot be taught.
Best Under the Radar Performance: Morgan McKay– The Banner Elk native was huge for Christ School in the win. He showed a ability to step out and knock down big shots behind the three-point line, altered shots in the paint, grabbed big rebounds against the bigger Wesleyan Christian front line. He did not make many mistakes and was a huge key in the win for the Greenies.
Best Passer: Damon Harge Jr- Harge was perfect with the basketball in his hands. He found the open player at all of the right moments. He showed a high level ability to dissect the defense and either score or make a great pass to the open teammate.
Best Shooter: Matt Halvorsen- The Western Carolina commit did not make a shot in the first half, but is one of the best shooters in the state. He showed that in the first few minutes of the second half and was a big factor in the 27-16 3rd quarter scoring difference for Christ School. He made four of four three-pointers in the 3rd quarter and finished with 14 points.
