MVP: Zion Williamson- Tonight I saw the Zion Williamson show. The 6-foot-8 forward for Spartanburg Day School looks better than the last time I saw him back over the summer. He is just stronger, bigger and more powerful than anyone else on the floor. He had numerous dunks in the first half that had the crowd running around on the sidelines and in the stands. He finished with 38 points, four up on his average this season of 34.7 points per game.
Play of the Game : Williamson caught a pass about mid-court, dribbled down the left side and took off on the baseline for a tom-a-hawk jam over a Asheville Christian defender that had the crowd going crazy. A few of the mix-tape guys were in the building so I am sure the video will make it to YouTube before the night ends.
Best Offensive Performance: Caleb Mills- The 2019 guard has been having a solid season so far and saved his best to date for the match-up tonight. Mills connected on seven 3-point shots from all around the arc. What separates Mills is his ability to create space from his defender. His step-back is almost impossible to guard. He gets just enough space to get to his spot before he uses his vertical leaping ability to rise up and be able to get the shot off. He has a tight handle and finished with 33 points for the Lions.
Best Defensive Performance: Williamson- With his size and strength he is a force on the defensive end. One play in particular, Chris Clayton of ACA had a break-away lay-up and Williamson chased him down to pin the ball against the backboard and force the turnover. He intimidates the shot selection for the opposition and makes it nearly impossible to get the shot you want off.
Best Intangibles: Chris Clayton- Clayton is a work-horse on the glass, he hustles every play and you get a lot out of Clayton every night.
Best Guy off the Bench: Bishop Richardson- Richardson is a streaky shooter and knocked down some key 3-point baskets for Spartanburg Day. He is a smooth guard with a good ability to make the right pass or hit the open shot if need be.
Best Under the Radar Performance: Max Spurling: The sophomore guard from Avery County is new to Asheville Christian but that will not be the case for long. This kid is going to be a special player. He shot the ball great tonight. He is a threat from the outside every time he touches the ball. He has a scorer’s mentality, smart, high basketball IQ, and has a shot that at becoming another Division One prospect out of ACA.
Best Underclassman: Caleb Mills- Mills already has offers from Winthrop and Lipscomb. With performances like tonight that will soon change. He has the ability to be a very good college guard. He has all of the tools and knows
how to use them to get to the next level. He is one to really keep a eye on in this area.
Best Catch and Shoot Guy: Kyle Tracey- The junior guard is smooth and knocked down shot after shot from behind the 3-point line. He came off screens and would be ready as soon as the ball came his way.
