MVP-
CJ Thompson-The senior point guard scored from all over the floor and was the main difference maker in this game from the tip. Standing 5-foot-9, Thompson doesn’t have the length that some taller guards may have but he makes up for it with his speed and ability to create space from defenders. He is a big-time wide receiver in football but should have the chance to play both sports in college at the Division Two level.
Best Offensive Performance-
CJ Thompson- His scoring ability was in full effect tonight, he was making the right passes to teammates and was great in the open floor.
Best Guy off the Bench-
One player that I was really impressed with not only tonight but for the future in WNC was Kobe Ball. One of only two sophomores on the roster, was helpful on defense and brought a little bit of energy to the team when he was on the floor. He has a strong build, athletic and knows the game. I can see him being an all-conference type selection in his junior and senior seasons.
Best Underclassman-
Kobe Ball- The sophomore showed a lot of poise going against some of the Rocket’s bigger players and did not back down.
Best Under the Radar Performance-
Damien Ferguson- WNC’s all-time leading passer in football showed a glimpse of the type of athlete he is tonight. He is great at seeing the angles in the game and using them to his benefit, he is a above average passer and can change direction on a dime. He is just an athlete. And a very impressive one at that.
Best Feel for the Game-
Kaedin Robinson-The junior wing/guard is another fine athlete. He is also a standout on the football field for the Rockets and just now got back into the rhythm of basketball. He is a productive palyer on both ends of the floor. He gets the garbage plays, he runs the floor, he gets loose rebounds. Most importantly Robinson just knows the game and knows where to be on the floor.
Best Passer-
Isaiah Pruett- The junior point guard had a off night in the scoring column but he made up for it with his passing ability and his ability to see the floor. He is a impressive point guard with just his passing ability and even more impressive when his shot is falling. It was just one of those nights where he had to make a difference doing what he could control.
Best Aspect of the Game-
Tonight was the induction of the Erwin High School Athletic Hall of Fame. With that, a lot of the former players from some of Erwin’s teams made their way to see long-time head coach Van Allen be inducted. Some players in attendance were Rick Talbert and LaMichael Harris (played in the late 1990’s with future NBA player Rashad McCants) and Matt Hedden, a former All-WNC player for Van Allen who played college basketball at Mars Hill College.
