Logan jumped out to a big lead in the first half, but Vincennes stormed back behind their star Chris Darrington. After a Vincennes spurt Logan got control of the game back and held on to beat previously undefeated Vincennes 80-73. Both teams are loaded with D1 and D2 prospects. Here is our 10 Best from the game!
MVP
SG Jalen Perry (John A Logan – Sophomore)
With Logan’s go to combo forward Michael Tucker still out it was Perry that stepped up to make the difference. The versatile two guard was brilliant shooting it from the perimeter. He made tons of pull up jumpers from both three and mid-range. Pulled up with confidence and they looked good almost every time it left his hand. Silky smooth with the ball and works around screens well. Rebounded well throughout the contest and played tough D on Darrington in spurts. Perry had 24 points. Mid-major to low-major prospect.
Best offensive performance
SG Chris Darrington (Vincennes – Sophomore)
Darrington was the best prospect on the floor. He is a combo guard that played more on the ball than we had seen in the past. The sophomore is known as a prolific scorer that when he gets rolling can be tough to stop. That is exactly what happened in spurts as Darrington got super hot from the field. He is an outstanding jump shooter that can hit them both pulling up and off the catch. Athleticism and quickness to win off the bounce where he finished at the rim twice with up and unders along with making regular trips to the charity stripe. Finished with 23 points. Mid-major plus prospect with the chance to be a high-major kid in right system.
Best defensive performance
PF Jerome Davis (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Davis is an undersized four man that brings toughness on the interior. He defended well in the paint making it hard for Vincennes bigs to score. Shot blocking presence. He struggled a bit finishing around the hoop through traffic on some bunnies that he should have made. Did hit a few in the second half while drawing contact and getting to the line. Davis had 10 points. D2 prospect.
Best rebounder
C Romaro Gill (Vincennes – Sophomore)
The seven footer from Vincennes has great length and height. He is a bit mechanical at times and struggled finishing although he did have a dunk on a pick/roll in the first half and a bank in to start the second half. He is a sound rebounder that high points balls and clears the glass. Foul trouble hindered him from having a bigger impact.
Best passer
PG Chad Culbreath (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Culbreath is a smaller point guard that plays with speed and heart. He is quick getting in and out of traffic and works well around screens. Uses hesitation to keep the defender off balance when attacking. Scores with layups in the paint and can hit a pull up three. Got to the line for some big free throws late. Pushes tempo and is a solid passing point guard. He had 17 points.
Best catch and shoot guy
G Jaelin Sanford (Vincennes – Sophomore)
Sanford came off the bench and was a sparkplug for Vincennes. He drilled shots from all over the floor throughout the contest. He was a standout shooter from both mid-range and three. Hit big shots in key moments. Sanford had 13 points. Possible D2 kid.
Best guy off the bench
SG Emile Lewis (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Lewis is an athletic wing that came off the bench to give a lift to Logan on both ends. He is a quality defender, hits the glass, and can score with a baseline J on occasion. Lewis went for 9 points. D2 prospect.
Best intangibles
SG Allen Billinger (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Billinger is a shooting guard originally from Carbondale High School. The guard was outstanding early in the contest hitting pull up jumpers from both mid-range out to three. Balanced and pure shooting stroke. Playing with a lot of confidence. Billinger had 11 points. Low-major target.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Isaiah Tisdale (Vincennes – Freshman)
Tisdale is a powerful shooting guard that handles it well and is best attacking the rim on straight line drives to the bucket. He had 8 points.
Best underclassmen
PF Rade Kukobat (Vincennes – Freshman)
Kukobat is a tough and versatile post for Vincennes that is the kind of big you want on your team, but hate to play against. Crafty scorer down low that utilized a right hook several times and got on the glass. Plays with physicality in the post on both ends. Hit a three as well. 16 points. One to watch going forward as he is only a freshman.
