“My knee was hurting all summer, so I went and got it checked out and I had to get new cartilage and new bone in my knee. It’s a six to nine month recovery,” said the 5-foot-11 junior.
Some coaching experience will be the silver lining for one of the state’s top guards, who averaged 14.8 points per game last season as a sophomore.
“I want to be a college basketball coach, so this will be a good experience for me to be out there sitting on the bench with my coach,” said Lake. “And he said I’ll be helping him coach and stuff like that, so this will be a good experience for me.”
With the recovery timetable as lengthy as it is, playing this winter is out of the question for Lake. A devastating blow for the Bobcats.
But he’ll still have a 17U summer ahead of him with the Martin Brothers, and his senior season after that.
“My goal is to get back by the summer. I want to play my 17U season, that’s really important for the recruiting process. We’ll see how it goes, I hope to get back before six months, I’ll have to work hard in rehab,” said Lake.
“They said I’ll be 100 percent when I get back, which is great because I want to play college basketball.”
Despite the pain he was experiencing in his knee, Lake was able to play all spring and summer with the Martin Brothers’ 16U squad.
And he played well enough to pick up some Division II interest.
“I have a lot of D2s looking at me right now; Upper Iowa, Northwest Missouri State, Truman State, Northern State, Winona State and Augustana,” said Lake, who mentioned Northwest Missouri State and Augustana have reached out to him the most.
“They‘ve called me and said this is a bummer but that they’ll keep in contact with me and stuff like that. It’s good to hear that.”
