But some wily vets are on the roster too, and 6-foot-4 small forward Jack Moore will lead the Bears this season, and some team success could lead to a boost in his recruitment.
After averaging a team-best 10.3 points per game last season, Moore was able to pick up some attention from some Division II and Division III hoops programs.
“Central was talking to me for a little while, and then Loras, University of Chicago, and University of Wisconsin-Platteville. University of Nebraska-Kearney has been talking to me a little bit too,” said Moore.
He’s also a standout on the gridiron, and says for football he’s been seeing some interest from higher level programs.
“I really don’t know what’s going to happen. I have the basketball option, but I think I’d like to go play football somewhere,” he said.
“I’ve talked to Iowa a little bit for football, and I know Western Illinois wanted some stuff from me, and so did South Dakota State.”
From the sounds of it though, Moore will likely need to be offered by a higher level program if he’s going to pursue any sports in college.
He’s prioritizing academics, and his future after college.
“I’m only going to beat my body up for another four years for a higher level school. And it also just depends on the school and the academics and stuff like that,” said Moore, who mentioned he wants to pursue chemistry and pre-dentistry.
“That would require quite a lot of time in the classroom, so if I only had a chance to play at a very small Iowa school I don’t know if I would.”
But for now, Moore is focused on leading his Bears in what could be a season where they surprise some teams, with a mix of young talent and seasoned veterans.
“We’re projected to finish last in the conference and we’re OK with that — we’re not going to let that happen. Last year was kind of hard, it was a rough year for everyone,” said Moore.
“We have a lot of talent, and it just depends on who we play for who will step up. Myself and Jared Kruse will lead us in scoring again, and Spencer Tucker will hit our clutch 3s again. And I’m not sure exactly what our new freshman Xavier Foster’s role will be, but he’s obviously a really good player, with a couple offers (Iowa, Creighton) already.”
