SCL is a great football program, as it had the top ranking in Class AAA by the end of the regular season and rolled opening round sections opponent Como Park 44-14. In that game, Maag caught five receptions for 133 yards and two scores; the Crusaders now face Patrick Henry tonight for a chance to go to state.
But this is a basketball site, and so we took this opportunity to check in with Garett about how his AAU season went and what his plans are for this winter (head over to our friends NorthstarFootballReport.com for A+ playoff football content).
“My time with Minnesota Select was good,” said Maag, who played up with Mitch Ohnstad’s 17U team. “Our team did well. I was out with an injury half of the season. I’m 100 percent now, and looking forward to the season. I want to improve my dribbling, shooting, and playmaking, and I can improve everything else, too.”
After an impressive state run last year, St. Croix lost three scholarship-level contributors (Ade Murkey, Trent Krueger, Aage Rovney) to graduation. Maag and teammate Jamaris Johnson were Select teammates and are some of the few returners who got time last year.
“I don’t like to think of either of us as focal points,” Maag said of himself and Jamaris. “It’s a team game, and that’s how we will approach this season. Not a lot of people are expecting much from us since we lost a lot of talent, so we consider ourselves to be underdogs this year.”
Maag mentioned Stephen Kletscher, Dorell Bratton, Devon Friese and other role players as important parts this winter. There is also a growing list of college teams that will be keeping track of Maag’s development this season.
“Augustana, Bemidiji State, UM-Duluth, Briar Cliff, Winona State, Elon University, and others,” Maag listed.
