Subsequently the good-sized sharpshooter was able to pick up his first Division I offer, and has some other interest starting to come his way.
“This summer was pretty good, I got a lot of calls. I got an offer from Air Force, and a call from Cornell, and a couple camp invites from Maryville University and Sioux Falls,” said Vander Zwaag.
“They’ve all been calling and texting and a lot of letters.”
Still, with his junior and senior seasons ahead of him, plus an important 17U offseason, Vander Zwaag is more focused in improving himself than he is with his recruitment.
“Right now I’m just working on being the best player I can be,” he said. “And I’m trying to get noticed by putting my best effort out there, and if it happens, it happens.”
Already one of the state’s best shooters, he upped his shooting prowess even more this summer, working relentlessly to better himself while traveling the country with his Kingdom Hoops squad.
“This summer I’ve really been working on being a consistent shooter all-around,” he said. “And I’ve also been working on driving into the paint, and some defensive work.”
After a sophomore season coming off the bench and averaging 7.2 points on 43 percent 3-point shooting, Vander Zwaag comes into his junior season a wily vet, ready to up his production.
“Coach (Bobby Sandquist) is going to expect me to play my game. We have amazing players so he’s not expecting too much out of me; just get some assists, score some points and play my hardest,” said Vander Zwaag.
“We’re just getting everything tuned up for the season right now. We’re a team, no individuals, we’re just going to play our hardest and get some dubs.”
