Kitzmann also played with the Iowa Mavericks’ top 17U squad this spring and summer, and in addition to picking up an NAIA offer, he was able to list a slew of Division III schools that are interested.
“I have talked to and gone on visits to Loras, Simpson, Coe, Dubuque and Luther, and I do have an offer from Clarke,” said Kitzmann. “And I’ve talked to a couple out-of-state D3s, but I am looking to stay in-state.”
Iowa’s 106th-ranked 2017, Kitzman has been weighing his options between D3 and NAIA schools.
“I’m definitely looking at both options. I know I can get money for playing at an NAIA, but as far as academics, I could probably get just as much money by playing at a D3,” he said. “So I’m really just looking at the best place for me and where I’ll be most comfortable for the next four years.”
After taking visits to the aforementioned D3 programs, he was able to narrow the list down to which ones he likes best.
“Definitely Loras and Simpson for D3 are the ones that stood out to me. I’m going to an interview soon to Loras to see if I can get some scholarship money, they really stood out to me,” said Kitzman. “And with Simpson I’ve been to camps and seen the campus and really liked what they’re all about. And the coaches seemed like they really wanted me, so I really liked that.”
The talented senior went on to define his playing style.
“I would definitely say my strengths are driving and dishing to open people in the lane or to big-men. And I would say being pretty physical on defense and I’ve put on some weight since last year and that’s helped out alot.”
With his entire senior season ahead of him, Kitzman mentioned to his PHIA how his role will change with the Spartans this season.
“I definitely want to shoot better from the arc, and I’ve been working on that a lot this summer. And also I want to up my assists, and at the same time limit my turnovers,” said Kitzman, who averaged 3.1 points, 2.1 assists and 1.4 turnovers per game last season.
“Last year it was always me looking for the open guy, and it wasn’t really me looking to create for myself. This year coach definitely wants me to be a lot more confident, and look to score and look to get others open.”
