Cristie Mitchell and Jermaine Walker started the event a few years ago and it has grown every year since then. Numerous players who would go on to be stars in college and now are in the NBA are Charlotte Hoops Challenge alums.
Tonight, two teams from the Charlotte area, South Mecklenburg High School and Concord High School faces off. Both teams were playoff bound teams last season but lost a little of their firepower to graduation and transfer. Concord lost UNC commit Rechon Black to Montverde Academy in Florida after helping lead the Spiders to the first round of the NCHSAA state playoffs last season. South Mecklenburg with the win tonight 67-57.
Player of the Game: South Mecklenburg senior big man Bryant Thomas. He scored a game-high 22 points and had five rebounds in the win. The 6-foot-8 center had 10 points in the critical fourth quarter.
Play of the Game: South Meck’s Trey Jackson picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter. He came back in the game with under three minutes left in the game and South Meck went on a 9-3 run to finish off the Spiders.
Best Offensive Performance: 6-foot-8 center Bryant Thomas was scoring at will throughout most of the game. He showed good footwork and a nice post presence in the paint to receive the ball and make baskets.
Best Defensive Performance: The defense of 2019 Kevin Tate of South Meck with the game late in the 4th quarter. The hustle and hard-noes play of Tate helped South Mecklenburg maintain their lead and seal the victory.
Best Intangibles: South Meck’s Kevin Tate was all over the floor, going after loose balls and getting big rebounds for the Sabres. He is a do-it-all glue guy for South Meck as their season goes on.
Best Guy off the Bench: Jack Irby, Concord’s quarterback who just finished their season last week came off the bench and had 7 points for the Spiders.
Best Under-the-Radar Performance: 2017 guard Jordan Rotan of Concord High School can shoot it. He was 3 of 4 from three-point line for the game.
Best Underclassman: 6-foot-5 sophomore guard Paul Hudson scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds.
Best story to watch moving forward: Concord’s 6-foot-5 forward Hamsah Nasirildeen is a University of South Carolina football commit who had 16 points and 8 rebounds for the game. Frank Martin may have a two-sport player he can use when basketball season comes along.
