He’s waited patiently in a Hoover system that’s had plenty of guard talent the last two seasons, and it appears that patience is about to pay off. Thedford was outstanding today, hitting jumpers and scoring in the lane, and could have a huge season for the Huskies.
Chance Gibbons, 6’3 G, Ankeny Centennial (2018)
We moved him up a bit in our most recent 2018 rankings, but we didn’t move him high enough. He’s much better than the 83rd best 2018 in the state; athletic, big, skilled with a fluid midrange J.
Cameron Cramer, 5’10 PG, Des Moines East (2017)
He was pretty decent last season as a junior, and he worked hard this offseason to improve. Now, especially with Fred Bickham injured, he’s ready to lead the Scarlets, and he looked good doing it today.
Mhiyu Thomas, 6’3 SF, Des Moines Roosevelt (2017)
Until Norwalk transfer Cade Moritz is eligible to play in January, Thomas will have a heavy load to carry with the ‘Riders. He’s a good-sized and tough wing who could post big-time numbers this season.
Reese Skinner, 5’11 G, Valley (2017)
It was two summers ago when we were tweeting trying to figure out who this kid was during a summer camp. Now, he’s in the Valley starting lineup, and making the most of it. He hits regularly from deep, plays smart, and can get to the hoop too.
Dylan Jones, 6’7 SF, Waukee (2019)
This sensational 2019 was excellent at our Top 250 Expo in September, and today was like a replay of that. He was dunking, swatting shots and making his presence felt all over the court. He is going to rocket up the 2019 rankings.
Noah Hart, 6’2 G, Waukee (2019)
With such a bevy of talent at Waukee, it was unclear coming into this event how Hart would be used. Well, he was the first guy off the bench and he made his presence felt immediately with an offensive rebound and putback + foul. The next possession down he hit a triple. He’ll be a key piece for the Warriors this season.
Trevor Miller, 6’5 G/F, Urbandale (2017)
We knew this good-sized wing would be the focal point of the J-Hawk offense, and he was that and then some today. He scored 14 points in his team’s loss to Waukee, more than anyone else at the event (through the first five games).
Drew Maschoff, 6’3 G, Ankeny (2017)
Last season Maschoff was the lone junior starter on a senior-laden squad, now, he’s one of the only seniors on a new-look Hawks team. He was his usual outstanding self today, scoring from deep and at the hoop, and his passing was crisp and especially adept.
Dawson Jones, 6’6 F, Johnston (2017)
Many of the Dragons could have been included in this list, but Jones was the high scorer so we went with him. He’s a versatile forward, able to play on the wing as a small forward, or in the post as a power forward. He was impressive everywhere he played today.
